We all have to admit that our all-inclusive travel checklists will include everything from the inconsequential items (which we refer to things we need “in case of an emergency”) to our essentials. And yet, even after being really meticulous, we sometimes miss out on carrying this ‘vital companion’ along with us.

a. One of the most common events where travel insurance can come in handy is if you lose your baggage, your luggage is delayed or your purse is stolen. Where otherwise you might have to spend heavily for your daily necessities in a new city, travel insurance can reimburse this cost within the limit stipulated by your chosen policy.
Exceptions: Loss of baggage claim is inadmissible if the destination is the country of your residence. Also, loss due to reasons of war, terrorism or natural calamities are not covered.
b. If there are any unforeseen medical expenses, which arise after you arrive at your destination, they can cost you a fair bit. Travel insurance can take care of these hospital and medical expenses, and even evacuations if necessary, when abroad.
Exceptions: Treatments for pre-existing medical conditions. Also, extreme risk sports will not be covered in your insurance, unless you have applied for additional cover options from your provider.
c. If you lose your passport, you will have to spend a lot of money to procure a new one without any delay. Knowing that travel insurance will reimburse this amount to you can make it a less intimidating situation.
Exceptions: You might not avail reimbursement if you don’t to report the loss to appropriate police authorities within 24 hours.
d. There might be instances where you would have to give your trip a miss, after you’ve made all the necessary bookings. Or a trip has to be interrupted halfway through for reasons beyond your control. Travel insurance can mitigate the monetary loss and might provide you with a refund or reimbursement, whichever is applicable.
Exceptions: Deductibles, exclusions and reasons for the cancellation of your trip which are not specifically mentioned in the policy will not be covered by travel insurance.
